No Candy for Halloween? No Problem!

Let me start off by saying that when I was a kid I was expecting nothing less than candy for halloween or so I thought.  When I heard the idea of people handing out something other than candy for treats, I was in shock!  No candy for halloween is a crime, right?  Not necessarily.  Trying to remember back to the days of roaming the streets of Belle Chasse for halloween,  I recall getting just as excited when the occasional set of plastic fangs or bouncy eyeballs were given to me.

Is it the excitement of getting more candy than you are able to eat?  Is it knowing that your parents will give you a pass on the 30 miniature snickers you are planning on eating that evening?  Is it the thrill of defying the odds of going into a diabetic coma?  Nope, nope and nope!  I will tell you what it is.  It’s the thrill of getting stuff!  It doesn’t matter what it is as long as its going into your plastic pumpkin.  That thrill of getting stuff is what it’s all about.

I have a 6 year old that loves to get stuff.  If he has a quarter in his pocket, it pains him not to have a bubble gum machine right in front of him.   He’s like a addict that needs his fix, and his fix is to hand over his money and get his trinket.  It doesn’t matter what that trinket is either.   Now, when he gets the shakes, I take him to the dollar store.    He knows that there is a chance that that toy will break that day or maybe even taking it out of the package, but that is a chance that he is willing to take.

So, if you are one of those parents who want to hand out something that will not rot the kiddies teeth but are worried about what other people will say, worry no more!   It’s not about the candy, but the thrill of getting something.
